Facial or Chemical Peel treatments

Facial peels involve the application of a chemical solution to the skin, which encourages the formation of new skin cells while speeding up the shedding of dead skin cells. Chemical peels work by removing different layers of skin, allowing damaged cells to be removed and replaced by newer, healthier skin during the healing process. This can help to reduce wrinkles, fine lines, acne scars and pigmentation, improve skin texture and even diminish sun damage.

We can also combine our facial peels with a Microdermabrasion at Rejuven8 Cosmetix to maximise the benefits by mechanically removing some of the dead damaged skin cells in addition to applying the peeling agent.

Facial or chemical peels are intended to remove the damaged skin’s outer layers, resulting in a brighter complexion and smoother texture. A chemical solution will be applied to the face or other parts of the body during treatment. The solution will penetrate the skin’s outer layers, destroying dead skin cells while also stimulating cell growth deep within the dermis. This action exfoliates the skin, revealing a healthier complexion and aiding in the reduction of wrinkles.

The benefits of facial or chemical peels include improved texture and tone of skin, reduction in fine lines, pigmentation, age spots and scarring. Chemical peels can also reduce acne, shut down enlarged pores and improve the overall appearance of the skin.

In preparation for your treatment session, you may want to avoid sun exposure for a few weeks before the peel. Your clinician may also ask you to stop using certain products such as retinol, exfoliants and hydroquinone before your session. During the consultation, your clinician will discuss the best approach to take for you.

What are Facial or Chemical Peels?

Facial or chemical peels are topical agents that produce a superficial and precise ablation of the skin. A controlled destruction of the outer skin layers (epidermis and upper dermis) is achieved, which is followed by skin repair and regeneration.
Chemical peels produce a controlled wound that will result in skin renewal with the reduction or disappearance of sun damage, pigmentation, acne lesions, fine lines, and wrinkles. Superficial depressed scars are softened and become less visible. The depth of ablation and results depend on the strength of agents used.

Why do people choose chemical peels?

Facial or chemical peels are popular for a variety of reasons. They are quick and relatively pain free with predictable recovery periods dependent upon strength and type of peel. Chemical peels can aid in the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as uneven skin tone, age spots and acne scars. Chemical peels can also help reduce pore size, improve skin texture, and make the skin appear more vibrant and youthful. They can even aid in the reduction of hyperpigmentation, scars and melasma.

How long do the results of facial or chemical peel treatment last?

The results of a facial or chemical peel can last for several months, depending on the type of peel and how deep it penetrates. Repeat treatments are recommended and additional treatments to help nourish the skin will achieve maximum benefit from a facial or chemical peel.

What skin concerns does a facial or chemical peel help to treat?

Here are some of the concerns which can be improved by facial or chemical peel treatments:

  • Sun damage to the face, neck and décolletage;
  • Poor Skin texture with dull lifeless looking skin;
  • Congestion with blackheads and whiteheads;
  • All severities of acne;
  • Patches of brown pigmentation;
  • Mild scarring from healed pimples;
  • Fine crepey lines and wrinkles on the skin;
  • Large dilated open pores.

Are chemical peel treatments safe?

Yes, chemical peels are generally considered safe when performed by an experienced Dermal Therapist but in inexperienced hands they can have disastrous effects. It is important to consult with a professional before beginning any treatment; they will be able to advise on the appropriate treatment for your skin type and skin concerns. There are 3 phases of response after a facial or chemical peel:

  1. Inflammatory – 1-3+ days

An acute inflammation is induced leading to a skin repair response with mild to moderate redness, skin warmth and mild swelling. Rarely- slight weeping may occur. The repair process is triggered with production of multiple growth factors.

  1. Proliferative – 3-10+ days

As the redness settles, skin dryness with flaking –peeling occurs. Growth factors induce regeneration and normalization of the epidermis, and increased production of type 3 collagen and elastin in the dermis.

  1. Maturation – 28+ days up to 1 year.

Collagen remodelling continues for at least six months creating a plumper dermis and improved skin tone.  Scar tissue is softened, and skin smoothness is improved. Type 3 collagen is gradually replaced by type 1 stronger collagen.

Is the procedure painful?

Facial or chemical peel treatments can cause a feeling of heat or a slight stinging sensation, but this is usually well-tolerated.

Are there any side effects associated with a chemical peel?

The most common side effects of a chemical peel include redness, swelling and an initial thickened, dry and tight sensation to the skin. Once this settles the skin may physically shed to varying degrees depending upon the treatment performed.

What is the cost?

The cost of treatment varies depending on the area to be treated and the number of treatments required. During your consultation, one of our cosmetic medical professionals will determine the cost for you. Before your treatment begins, you will always be asked to approve the number of units and the cost.
